Our current store on Jiefang Road, Hangzhou
When you hold a pair of scissors crafted in Hangzhou, you’re holding more than a tool — you’re holding a piece of history that stretches back over three and a half centuries. This is the story of how that tradition continues today through Hangzhou Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Store (杭州张小泉剪刀店有限公司).
The Zhang Xiaoquan Legacy: Where It All Began
In 1663, during China’s Qing Dynasty, a craftsman named Zhang Xiaoquan (张小泉) established what would become one of the most respected names in Chinese tool-making. His workshop in Hangzhou’s Dajing Lane (大井巷) district set standards for quality and craftsmanship that would influence generations.
Hangzhou’s Dajing Lane wasn’t chosen by accident. The area had unique advantages: access to quality steel, proximity to water for tempering, and a concentration of skilled metalworkers. Over time, Dajing Lane became synonymous with excellence in scissors and cutting tools — a reputation that persists to this day.
The Zhang Xiaoquan tradition established key principles that still guide Hangzhou’s tool-making industry: careful selection of materials, precise heat treatment and tempering, attention to blade alignment and sharpness, and rigorous quality testing before sale. These weren’t just manufacturing techniques — they were a philosophy of craftsmanship that became embedded in Hangzhou’s industrial culture.
Continuous Operation Through Changing Times
Business license from the 1950s, documenting continuous operation
As Hangzhou’s scissor-making industry evolved through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dajing Lane remained its heart. Our store emerged from this tradition, rooted in the historic district where generations of craftsmen had perfected their trade.
Through decades of transformation — from imperial China through the modern era — we maintained continuous operation in Hangzhou’s tool industry. Our business license from the 1950s, issued by the Hangzhou People’s Government Bureau of Industry and Commerce, documents this enduring presence — proof of sustained commitment to serving customers through changing times.
Recognition of Excellence
Quality and service don’t go unnoticed. In 1990, Hangzhou Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Store was awarded the prestigious title of “Hangzhou Distinguished Store” (杭州名特商店) by the Hangzhou municipal government. This recognition honored businesses that demonstrated exceptional quality, service, and contribution to the city’s commercial reputation.
Official Heritage Recognition
Official document from Hangzhou government recognizing our heritage lineage
In 1997, the Hangzhou Shangcheng District Bureau of Commerce issued an official document addressing our store’s historical connection to the Zhang Xiaoquan tradition. This government recognition formally acknowledged our place in the lineage of Hangzhou’s scissor-making heritage.
The document is significant because it establishes the historical context: while the Zhang Xiaoquan trademark belongs to the manufacturing sector, our store represents the continuous retail tradition that has served customers in this craft for generations. We are part of the same heritage, carrying forward the same commitment to quality that Zhang Xiaoquan established in 1663.
The Yan’an Road Era (1991–2001)
Grand opening of our Yan’an Road location in the early 1990s
The 1990s marked a new chapter. In 1991, we relocated to Yan’an Road, one of Hangzhou’s main commercial streets. This move represented both growth and modernization — bringing traditional quality to a broader customer base.
Store signage at Yan’an Road
The Yan’an Road store featured modern retail displays while maintaining our focus on quality scissors, knives, and kitchenware. Customers found comprehensive selections of cutting tools, all curated with the quality standards inherited from Hangzhou’s craft tradition.
Interior of the Yan’an Road store
The store became known not just for product variety, but for knowledgeable service — staff who understood the products because they understood the tradition behind them. For a decade, the Yan’an Road location served as our base, building relationships with customers who valued quality and authenticity.

Jiefang Road: Our Home Since 2001
Our Jiefang Road store, serving customers since 2001
In 2001, we moved to our current location on Jiefang Road. This relocation positioned us in another of Hangzhou’s important commercial districts, allowing us to continue serving both local customers and the growing number of international buyers seeking quality tools from Hangzhou.

Today, our store continues the tradition established over three centuries ago, but with expanded capabilities. We work with trusted manufacturers throughout Hangzhou’s tool-making network, ensuring that every product meets the quality standards this region is known for.
Why This Heritage Matters for Buyers
You might wonder: why does a 360-year history matter when you’re simply looking to source quality scissors or knives?
Heritage is not nostalgia — it’s infrastructure. Centuries of tool-making in one region create embedded knowledge: understanding of materials, processes, and quality indicators that can’t be quickly learned or easily replicated. Our connections to Hangzhou’s manufacturing community run deep. We know which workshops excel at which products, which craftsmen maintain the highest standards, and how to ensure quality at every production stage.
The Hangzhou region today hosts one of the world’s densest networks of cutting-tool manufacturers precisely because the skills, supplier relationships, and quality culture accumulated here over three centuries. When we source a garden shear or a chef’s knife for an overseas client, we’re drawing on that network — and on standards for steel and workmanship that were set long before “supply chain” was a phrase.
That is the tradition behind every product we export: tools made to be used hard and kept for years.
Hangzhou Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Store Co., Ltd. (杭州张小泉剪刀店有限公司) continues to operate from Hangzhou, serving professional buyers across international markets.
